Patti Smith Series - 2024
This is a gesture of gratitude to Patti Smith.
For the familiarity Just Kids offered at a time when my life felt completely unfamiliar.
I read Just Kids during the summer of 2023, it was my third summer in New York City, and as I read, I recognized places and feelings in a way that centered me at a time I really needed centering.
I felt less alone, I fell more in love with the city, and I had a newfound appreciation for the people I’ve found here and experiences we’ve had — both happy and hard.
Since then, I’ve been working on this triptych as a small gesture of gratitude to Patti Smith.
For me, sound and color have always been intertwined. I think the actual name for that is synesthesia but I like to say I can “hear color.” These paintings depict what I saw when I heard the LP Hey Joe / Piss Factory, and albums Horses, and Radio Ethiopia.
I listened to each on repeat until the painting felt finished. They are all watercolor paintings done on paper that had been stretched over canvas bars, and each are gilded with coffee grounds and gold leaf.
Dimensions: 40” x 38” x 1”
Materials: watercolor, coffee grounds, gold leaf
